The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura has revealed plans by some individuals to disrupt the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament slated for next week.
Kayihura made the revelation on Saturday during the event organized at Kololo Independence Grounds to express gratitude to the armed forces for their efforts during the concluded Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government elections.
Police was the lead agency in managing the electoral period security that comprised of the police, army and intelligence bodies under the presidency.
“There are people planning to cause chaos next week when the Members of Parliament are going to be sworn in,” the IGP revealed, quoting intelligence reports.
“They want to negatively use the swearing in opportunity of ferrying transporters from upcountry to Kampala to disrupt things at the event. We are ready to deal with them.”
The newly elected MPS are scheduled to be sworn-in and take oaths of allegiance on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week according to the programme released by the office of the Clerk to Parliament.
Though only a limited number of close family members are allowed to the chambers of Parliament where the members do the actual swearing-in, several supporters are always allowed within the precincts of the institution during the event.
ChimpReports engaged the Deputy Police Spokeswoman, Polly Namaye after the event who told us that the force is already monitoring quite a good number of politicians in the country as far as the swearing in of the MPs is concerned.
“We are closely monitoring politicians who are mobilizing to pour people in Parliament with ill intentions to cause havoc,” Ms. Namaye said without revealing names and numbers of the politicians.
Ms. Namaye divulged that there are MP contestants who were not declared or gazetted by the Electoral Commission but are mobilizing to storm Parliament with their supporters for the swearing-in ceremony.
“There are those who lost in Parliamentary elections and did not think of seeking redress from the responsible institutions but are now ready and mobilized to be sworn in,” she added.
Defiance
The Clerk to Parliament which conducts the event exercises it strictly basing on the names gazetted by the EC.
The Deputy Police Publicist linked the new development to the opposition defiance campaign which started towards the presidential and parliamentary elections.
“The defiance campaign is spreading to Parliament and as police we are not going to allow it happen.”
She called on the politicians with the similar idea to desist since they are going to meet an equally prepared force.
This week the country experienced drama when a video of the former FDC presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye taking oath as President of Uganda ahead of President Museveni’s inauguration.
Besigye has since been arrested and charged with treason.
