Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament, Betty Nambooze Bakireke has promised to work tirelessly in the 10th Parliament to ensure that the lost glory of Parliament is restored through mobilisation zing all members to fulfil their constitutional duties.

Nambooze told reporters at Parliament that she will dedicate all her time to fight what she described as the “dictatorship in the country championed by the President.”

She observed: “There are tendencies that the country is being led into dictatorship and the people of Mukono have sent me to defy that situation and to do what I can within my means to try and put Uganda back to democracy. That is my mission here to represent the people of Mukono.”

“We are no longer moving as a country by the rule of law but president Museveni has changed to the rule by the law. It is the president through Parliament who rules by law; whatever bad thing he wants, he just brings to Parliament which we have tested in the 9th Parliament.”

Nambooze, a harsh critic of government, was among MPs who took oath on Monday.

Government maintains Uganda is being run in a democratic manner, allowing citizens to fully exercise their civil liberties.

Nambooze observed that she’s so worried that the 10th Parliament might be worse than the previous house in terms of rubber stamping and passing laws in favour of the president than fighting for public interests.

She remarked that this has caused the public to lose hope and trust in Parliament at such a critical time when a lot needs to be done in fast-tracking development.

“I am here as a symbol of hope to Ugandans to work and restore the glory of Parliament,” said Nambooze.

“I call on the new MPs not to look at privileges and enrolments but rather work towards restoration of rule of law.”
