Former FDC President Rtd Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu has warned against being fixated on President Museveni’s removal from office, saying opposition must spend more time on preparing for the post-Museveni era.

“My belief has always been that we should resist the temptation of being obsessed with regime change in and of itself,” said Muntu on Monday.

“Museveni’s departure is a given, whether he likes it or not. But if we do not prepare for the post-Museveni era, we may find ourselves in the same position we are trying to escape from, where the country is dependent of the charity of individuals rather than functioning institutions.”

Gen Muntu’s remarks come at a time he is embarking on “comprehensive nationwide consultation meetings” with various stakeholders on the “way forward” and “how to put country before self.”

Gen Muntu’s latest remarks underscore his determination to maintain his liberal niche amid concerns radicalism was taking root in the leading opposition party.

Muntu’s romantic approach towards President Museveni’s government has won praise and condemnation in equal measure.

Liberals praise his ability to articulate issues without necessarily being confrontational.

However, opposition activists say Muntu must realise he is dealing with hardened military men who can’t be persuaded out of power.

As he starts his consultations, Muntu will have to convince the public he is the right man for the top political job in the country amid reports he could start a political party independent from FDC.

“These consultations are not about me or any single individual. They are about how best to put country before self. How do we get our young people to realise that they are not merely spectators but stakeholders in our politics?” said Muntu.

“How do we get our women to reject the lip-service being paid to gender-based injustice and insist on holding their representatives accountable? What  is the best way to get our small but influential working class to realise that unless we sort out the unemployment crisis affecting their sisters and brothers, even the few jobs they have will quickly disappear? And ultimately, what kind of political formation can best facilitate this effort?” he wondered.

These are some of the questions Muntu will ask stakeholders as he tours the country.

Muntu said a detailed itinerary of these consultations will be shared with the public to ensure “transparency” and “broad inclusion.”

On informing authorities about the impending activities, Muntu said police is aware about the tour and expressed hope to engage with them on the same.

The consultations start today in Hoima District, Western Uganda.
