Dr Kizza Besigye has postponed his arrival in Uganda to next Monday (October 3) from September 29.
This was revealed by FDC’s top shot Wafula Oguttu on Tuesday afternoon.
“On behalf of the organizing committee for the return of the Peoples President, Dr Kizza Besigye from a long trip in USA and Europe, we wish to inform FDC leaders, members and supporters that due to unavoidable reasons, there has been a change in his travel arrangements,” said Oguttu.
“The Peoples President will now be returning home on Monday October 03, 2016,” he added.
The decision to reschedule Besigye’s return comes high on the heels of police’s threat to crush any planned procession along Entebbe Highway.
Oguttu yesterday said Besigye would arrive in Uganda at 8:15am aboard Kenya Airways.
He further said the former presidential candidate would brief the press at the airport.
ChimpReports today reported that FDC’s Mobilisation Boss, Ingrid Turinawe had already met party diehards in preparation for Besigye’s return.
Observers say after meeting several high profile supporters in the Diaspora, Besigye is determined to show political clout on arrival at Entebbe.
Besigye flew from United States on Sunday night before landing in Amsterdam the following day.
Oguttu today said a change in Besigye’s programme does not imply cancellation of other plans geared towards receiving him at the airport.
“All other arrangements remain the same,” said Oguttu, implying FDC’s decision to defy police on holding processions.
Police warning
Police spokesperson and Assistant Inspector General of Police, Andrew Kaweesi told journalists on Monday that Entebbe Road is a no-go area for political activities.
“We can’t allow anybody assemble along Entebbe highway to disrupt peace. Whoever continues with the alleged procession will not be allowed to see the light of the day,” Kaweesi warned.
He said the law bars processions along major highways as they disrupt traffic flow adding the opposition party ought to seek guidance from police on the matter.
“They should have requested for permission from police. But even then, we will not allow them hold a procession along the way considering what transpired some time back. ”
Kaweesi said any demonstration or procession ought to be done within the confines of the law.
Besigye has on four occasions lost presidential elections to President Museveni but has vowed to use defiance to dismantle the current government in power.
