A debate is raging following reports that the ruling NRM party is mooting the idea of amending Article 102 of the Constitution to allow President Museveni serve another term in office.
Article 102 (b) states that a person is not qualified for election as president of Uganda if he or she is “less than thirty-five years and or more than seventy-five years of age.”
President Museveni will clock 75 years in 2020, just a year before the next presidential elections.
Legally, this means this is president Museveni’s last term unless the constitution is amended.
To avoid losing their leader, the NRM MPs are said to be quietly mobilising support for the amendment of the Constitution.
While Museveni’s supporters say he is the right man for the job and should continue serving as president, opposition activists have warned of a “protracted battle” should anyone attempt to tamper with the Constitution.
It will be recalled that the constitution was in 2005 amended to scrap the two presidential term limits clause, paving way for Museveni’s reelection in 2006, 2011 and 2016.
